Jimi Carle, pictured front, will be entering her artwork for this year’s Surf Festival, to be held from October 21. Behind her are festival organisers – from left to right – James McMillan, Vanessa Thompson and Mike Jahn. Photo Jeff ‘Hanging Tenticles’ Dawson ‘A killer weekend in Byron Bay,’ is the motivation behind The Byron Bay Surf Festival, to be held October 21 to 23. Co-organiser Vanessa Thompson says the festival won’t be competitive, but rather ‘a celebration surf culture’. Art shows are planned, as well as live music, surf films, workshops, surf culture markets, a ‘freestyle and stoke’ surf sessions at Wategos Beach, and a surf swap meet also at Wategos. To kick it all off, an art exhibition and mentoring program for kids called stART me up has been announced. Developed by artist James McMillan in conjunction with Retrospect Galleries and the festival, prizes are up for grabs in each category, including a six-month artist mentorship. See www.byronbaysurffestival.com for the full program.
