Mad About the Void

Murrwillumbah is about to be offered a fresh perspective on beat culture with the upcoming art and entertainment extravaganza, Mad about the Void. Happening on the 18th of February at the recently formed Hip Pocket bookshop, those curious can expect to find a visual feast on offer seasoned with live blues, poetry and sitar.
The rather unique backdrop for the show is the mastermind of local musician and proprietor Elliot O’Reilly. Inspired by beat culture and the psychedelic aesthetic, Elliot has managed to create an environment that many locals have described as ‘a time warp to a lost era’. The artwork for the evening will be fashioned by Stokers Siding based surrealist, Daniel Foothead. On display will be an enchanting array of drawings and paintings heavily influenced by beat literature and Daniel’s own adventures ‘on the road’.
Elliot and Daniel are combining their talents to create a night of art and music to help invigorate and inspire local fringe culture in murrwillumbah. Mad about the Void is really an experiment to see how Hip Pocket might be utilized as a venue for locals to perform and display their creations. The show aims to introduce the shop as a focal point for further events and to share its potential as a local cultural space. “We feel that the northern rivers is an area rich with creative energy and people, but there are not many spaces that cater for the grass roots artisan.” Hip Pocket is in a unique position to fill this gap by providing a warm and inviting space with a specialized collection of inspiring literature and resources.
Mad about the Void runs from 5pm till late and can be discovered above toy kingdom on the main street of Murwillumbah. All are welcome for what will surely be an enlightening and eccentric evening of entertainment.
